WELCOME TO THE COMPUTER DEPARTMENT!

Before the upgrade After the upgrade

Information Technology is an introductory computing course, compulsory for all Grade 8 and 9 learners. The goal is twofold:

  • To provide pupils with the basic computer skills to enable them to cope better with their other school subjects, in an increasingly technologically-driven learning environment; and

  • To provide a foundation for those wishing to pursue the subject in Grades 10 - 12.

Computer Applications Technology (CAT) is offered to Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners. It is seen as an entirely new subject, not merely as a reworking of the old Computer Studies syllabus.

Unlike the old Computer Studies, the focus is now more upon the process and progress towards the goal, and not so much on the goal itself. This approach is reflected in the various portfolio and assessment requirements.

Scope

  • The syllabus has been designed to introduce learners to the fundamentals of computing, which will provide them with the foundations upon which to build further studies at a tertiary level.  They will gain valuable insights into the computer field should they not continue with studies in Computer Science or similar disciplines.

  • The emphasis will be on the more practical aspects of computing.  This syllabus will also lay greater emphasis on the use of application/end-user packages rather than an emphasis on programming languages.

  • The practical work, which forms an integral part of the course, will lead the learners to a greater understanding of the theoretical components of the syllabus.

  • The syllabus has been designed so as to introduce topics in the Grade 10 year that will be revisited in greater detail, in the Grade 11 and Grade 12 years.

General Outcomes/Purpose

After studying Computer Application Technology (CAT), a learner should:

  • Be able to solve a variety of problems with the aid of a computer.

  • Be conscious of the scope and limitations of the computer.

  • Have a frame of reference by means of which they can reliably, effectively and usefully apply this knowledge to interpret data in practice.

  • Be able to collect and process data and provide information in a variety of fields.

  • Have logical and critical thought faculties.

  • Be confident in using both standard/basic and advanced features of the MS Office Suite to run a small business.

  • Have sufficient knowledge of hardware and software in order to make informed decisions with regard to upgrading an old computer and buying new.

Minute Math

Click here to download the zipped file <MinuteMath.zip>. Extract the two files <MinuteMath.exe> and <clap.wav>, and create a shortcut on your desktop to the program. Note that this version of MinuteMath is still under development and as such is FREE for home use, but that it will stop working after 31 December 2009. Let me know if you would like to continue using it after that date.

The school record for Easy Addition is 72 ... can you beat that ?
