This exciting
subject is offered to Sans Souci Learners as a possible choice for Grade 12.
Every learner is introduced to Drama in Grade 8 and 9. In Grade 10, learners who have shown an
interest and ability in the subject are able to continue with it.
Drama incorporates
mime, voice production, movement and acting as well as an appreciation of
all art forms. A good command of the English language is important; as
learners are required to write essays, read plays and research topics.
This is a Performance subject and learners are expected tp be
involved in both performance and competition at all levels, as well as
attending productions whenever required.
The course is divided into two
parts:
-
Theory covers
areas such as the History of Drama, both internationally and locally.
-
Practical classes
involve voice, acting, mime and movement.
Drama, as an art
form, is concerned both with the workings of the imagination and with
discipline and craftsmanship. A study of the Principles and practice of
Drama provides a means of understanding the nature of people and the world.
Speech and Drama provides opportunities for creative expression. Learners
will develop an analytical approach and an understanding of human behaviour
in a variety of contexts. Group work is vital in this field. Acting ability
is not an absolute, as learners will be trained in a broader context than
that of performance on the stage.
Drama is a wonderful way of preparing oneself for life
outside the school. Through Drama, one learns to appreciate and understand
other cultures and ideas. Drama aims to produce confident, empathic and
creative people.
