Geography aims to
provide learners with a greater understanding of their world and to
instil a fascination in human and physical processes, e.g. urbanisation and
weather patterns. Learners should build-up a “sense of place”.
Contemporary issues, tolerance and understanding of developed and less
developed countries, and a feeling of inter-dependence are key ideas in the
subject. We aim at getting learners to “think globally and act locally”
and, in so doing, accept responsibility for their actions. Analysis,
decision-making, planning, interpretation and graphicacy are some of the
skills needed by learners.
Geography is no longer simply a matter of recalling facts and figures.
It is now called “Environmental and Geographical Sciences” at Universities,
and there is a shift towards a greater focus on the environment and
research. Geography equips learners with a broad base of knowledge and
skills that are very useful in a variety of career choices. In Grades 10 -12
learners are also taught map interpretation skills which are examined
separately. |
