We pride ourselves on being a very busy and successful department of the school and we are growing every year. We have talented and dedicated staff members who ensure that our learners acquire the skills necessary for performance and for the enjoyment of music.

The Music Department is a very active department and enjoys a high profile. It is a performance subject and all learners must be involved in the busy performance and competition schedule. Music is an academic subject and learners are expected to perform in concerts regularly. The Aural, Harmony and History of Music are as important as the practical. The History of Music is covered in great depth and the Grade 10 and 11 syllabi cover Music from the 18th to the 20th Century. Jazz is included.

The Music Department provides many opportunities. Apart from developing as a musician and performer, the girls learn to be confident and disciplined; they develop analytical skills and have lots of fun.

Every year the new Grade 8s attend a music audition. Most of our learners start taking music for the first time in Grade 8 and find it easy to reach the Matric Higher Grade level during their five years at the school. Learners who wish to take piano or violin should however, be at a Royal Schools of Music / Unisa / Trinity College Grade 2 level at the beginning of Grade 8.

Tuition is offered in the following instruments:

  • Piano

  • Voice

  • Brass (Trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium, Trombone, Tuba)

  • Woodwind (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone)

  • Violin

  • Percussion

Lessons on a girl’s first musical instrument are free for pupils taking Subject Music in Grades 8 to 12 and numerous instruments are available for hire from the school. The Music Department boasts five full-time teachers and six part-time teachers who offer individual practical tuition.

Our extra-mural timetable is very full. It is compulsory for our learners to belong to at least one of the following groups, as performance is considered a vital component of the music curriculum:

Our Wind Orchestra, "Jazz Cats" and Choir are very much in demand and perform at various venues throughout the Western Cape - our learners are always willing to perform in the evenings and during weekends, as they have such a love and enjoyment for music that performing does not feel at all like work. These groups also regularly participate in eisteddfods and various music festivals.
